Aposiopesis
Suddenly breaking off in speech. This usually happens with the use of a dash or ellipse.
ex.Get out, or else–!
Understatement
The presentation of something as being smaller, worse, or less important than it actually is.
ex. saying “it’s a bit chilly”, during a snowstorm.
Flash-forward
This is when the plot goes ahead of time; meaning a scene that interrupts and takes the book or story forward in time.
ex. In A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is visited by the ‘Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come’.
Dramatic Irony
When a character’s words or actions are clear to the audience or reader, but unknown to the character.
ex. A character is about to enter a room where the bad person is hiding, but the audience knows they are in there, creating suspense.
Rhetorical Question
A question asked in order to create a dramatic effect or to make a point rather than to get an answer.
ex. Who wouldn’t want to be a millionaire?
Flashback
A return to an earlier time in a text in order to clarify something.
ex.Thinking about your favorite show and when you watched it for the first time
