Level 1 - Sustainable construction materials Flashcards
What other sustainable construction are you aware of?
FSC Timber
Recycled steel
Electric arc furnace steel is made with 100% recycled steel
How is steel recycled?
Scrap is melted down using arc furnaces.
Materials are melted down to its molten state
What is more sustainable steel or concrete?
Steel is fully recyclable - can be melted down and reused
Concrete can only be used for back fill
Why is timber sustainable?
it absorbs carbon dioxide
What is FSC timber?
Forest Stewardship Council
Wood that is from forests that are managed in an environmentally appropriated and sustainable way
What is CLT?
Planks of wood are layered and glued perpendicular to the previous layer to create a structural rigidity and form a strong panel
What is Glulam?
Glue Laminated timber where planks are glued parallel to each other
What are some of the draw backs from using timber?
More expensive than steel or concrete
It cannot be used on residential buildings above 18m
It cant be used in external walls (non combustible materials ban following Grenfell)
What are the benefits of using timber?
Sustainable - reduces carbon emissions and absorbs carbon as trees are grown
Lighter than steel / Concrete
