Leukocytes Flashcards
Leukocytes
Circulate the blood and in various tissues
Types of leukocyte
Neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes, macrophages, basophils, lymphocytes
Granulocytes
Granulocytes contain the neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils
Granulocytes
Contain monocytes, lymphocytes, and macrophages
Neutrophils
Contain phagocytes. Are the most abundant type of leukocyte.
Neutrophil function
Found in blood but leave capillaries to enter enflamed tissues
Eosinophils
Phagocytes that circulate the blood for a short period of time before migrating to tissues and organs to become macrophages
Basophil functions
- Secrete anti clogging factors called Herapin at an infection site to help circulation flush the area.
- Secrete histamines that attract other lymphocytes and anti-bodies to the area
Monocyte
Same general idea as eosinophils, they are the largest lymphocyte
Macrophage
- Can engulf viruses and bacteria
2. Found where they can encounter bacteria, such as epithelia
Lymphocytes
Made of T and B cells that can memorize the immune response (antibodies) against specific pathogens
Have granules
Granulocytes
no granules
