Leukocyte Evaluation Flashcards
Decreased Lymphocyte Count
Lymphopenia
Decreased Monocyte Count
Monocytopenia
Suffix for increased count of Agranulocytes
“Cytosis”: Lymphocytosis and monocytosis
Suffix for increased count of Granulocytes
“Philia”: Neutrophilia, Eosinophilia, Basophilia
Causes of Neutropenia
- Decreased production
- Excessive use
- Viral infection
Causes of Neutrophilia
- Stress
- Inflammation (left shift “hallmark”)
Causes of Lymphocytosis
- Lymphoma
- Leukemia (FeLV)
- Excitement in cats
Causes of Lymphopenia
Stress and Corticosteroids
Causes of Monocytosis
Stress and Chronic Infection
Causes of Eosinophilia
- Allergies
- Parasites
- Neoplasia
- Addison’s Disease
Causes of Basophilia
Rare….seen with Eosinophilia
Could be Allergies
Causes of Basopenia

This is
- Glucocorticoids
- Ageing Change
- Prolonged Circulating time
- “Hypermaturation”
This is a MORPHOLOGIC ABNORMALITY known as Peiger-Huet Anomaly and is hereditary in Aussie/Basenji and acquired in Ruminants.
Nuclear Hyposegmentation
This is a MORPHOLOGIC ABNORMALITY where a Leukocyte has more than 3-4 Nuclear lobes. It can be the result of glucocorticoids or ageing.
