Leukemia Flashcards
this is a group of cancerous disorders that affect blood and the blood forming tissue and organs
luekemia
this is often the secondary cancer
leukemia
this develops without warning
is a defect in hematopoictic cells
in older adults poor prognosis
acute myelogenous leukemia
what is there always a risk for with leukemia
infection
thrombocytopenia
fever
neutropenia
what do you check for leukemia
absolute neutrophil count
(2500-6000)
what is the management for leukemia
stem cell transplant
induction therapy ( big risk for infection)
this is low grade lymphoma
usually in older adults
rarely have symptoms
choronic myelogenous leukemia
s/s of Chronic myelogenous leukemia
lymphadopathy
splenomegaly
fever, diaphoresis, weight loss, infection
management of chronic myelogenous leukemia
risk for infection - check WBC, monitor temp, handwashing
provide nutrition for pt
this is swollen lymph nodes
lymphadopathy
enlargement of the spleen
splenomegaly
two types of lymphocytic leukemia
acute and chronic
what is the goal of stem cell transplant for leukemia
totally eliminate leukemic cells using combo of chemo with or without total body irradiation
4 methods of harvesting stem cells
umbilical cord blood
autologous donor
allogenic donor
cinegenic donor
where are stem cells harvested from
bone marrow and peripheral blood
stem cells from your own body are called
autologous donor
stem cells from a donor, relative, etc are called..
allogenic donor
what is a cinegenic donor
identical twin donor
waht does chemo do before stem cell transplant
kills off cancer cells before transplant
what kind of complications can happen from stem cell transplant
transplant rejection
graft vs host disease
failure to engraft
infection
-this happens when donors lymphocytes see pt’s body as foreign and start to attack it
-will show within first 100 days and appear as s/s of infection
graft vs host disease
what do ppl take prior to getting stem cell transplant
immunosuppressants to prevent body from rejecting cells
what are the signs and symptoms of graft vs host disease
risk of infection
n/v/d
bleeding
mucositis
mylosuppression
skin issues - dark red papules on the hands
donors healthy immune system does not keep pt’s cancer cells from growing
failure to engraft
