Letts Revise GCSE - PE Flashcards
What is the difference between a ligament and a tendon?
Ligaments attach the bone
Tendons attach muscles to bones
Explain the terms abduction and adduction.
Abduction is movement away from the centre of the body
Adduction is movement towards the centre of the body
List the three main types of muscle fibre found in the body.
Cardiac muscle fibre
Smooth muscle fibre
Skeletal muscle fibre
What are the four main functions of the 206 bones in the skeleton?
Blood production
Protection
Support
Movement
Explain my smooth muscle fibre is often called involuntary fibre.
We do not have control over the actions of the muscle fibres, they work automatically.
What are the three main parts of the circulatory system?
The heart, which pushes blood around the body
The blood vessels, which carry the blood around the body
The blood, which acts as the transport system of the body
List the four things that make up blood.
Plasma
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
How does the blood help to stop the body from overheating during exercise?
It transports heat to the cooler parts of the body.
Explain how blood prevents loss through an open wound.
Blood clots at the sight of an open way. Enzymes from the platelets react with the air and cause the fibrinogen to change into fibrin. These fibres form a mesh to seal the wound (a scab).
What are the three main parts of the respiratory system?
The nasal passages The trachea (windpipe) The lungs
Explain the term ‘oxygen uptake’.
The amount of oxygen absorbed into the blood during each breath.
In which part of the lungs does gaseous exchange take place?
Alveoli
What happens to the diaphragm and ribs during expiration?
The diaphragm goes up (goes dome shaped).
The ribs move down and in.
Physical fitness can be said to have five major components. List these.
Strength, stamina, speed, suppleness and somatotype
List the components of motor fitness.
Power Agility Coordination Balance Reaction Attitude
When referring to principles of training, many people like to use the mneminic FITT. What does it stand for?
F - frequency (i.e. how often you should exercise)
I - intensity (i.e. how hard you should exercise)
T - time (i.e. how long you should exercise for)
T - type (i.e. what exercises you consider suitable for your chosen sport)
