Lessons 14-32 (for Test 2) Flashcards
What is a PROPOSITION?
a sentence in which 2 or more ideas are either joined together by an affirmation OR disjoined by a negation.
example: Our car is blue. Our car is not orange.
What are the three parts of a proposition?
subject
copula
predicate
Can the subject and predicate of a proposition be the same idea or term?
No.
In a proposition the subject and predicate should always be two different ideas or two different terms.
What is the PREDICATE of a proposition?
the part which is affirmed or denied about the subject
What is the COPULA of a proposition?
the part which proposes something
Can a proposition have all three parts, even if they aren’t all distinctly expressed in certain words?
Yes. One or more of the parts can be implied. They don’t have to all be written out specifically.
What is one reason why many people make false judgments? (from lesson 14)
because many people already firmly believe two ideas are joined/disjoined before they actually take the time to see clearly whether that is true or makes sense.
Can you always know whether part of a sentence is the subject or predicate just by looking at whether that part comes first or last in the sentence?
No. Sometimes the order of parts in the sentence is different.
