What’s another name for the “one’s place”?
The “unit’s place.”
Which numbers are hyphenated when you write them out?
All numbers between 20 and 100 (e.g. thirty-six.)
When is the hyphen used only sometimes?
With whole numbers when the whole number’s used as a modifier (e.g. ten-thousand’s place.)
Is the word “and” used?
No (e.g. “five hundred and one” is wrong but “five hundred one” is right.)
What is the zero point of a number line called?
The origin.
Is zero positive or negative?
Neither.
When we put a dot on the number line to mark the location of a number, what is the dot called?
The “graph” of the number.
What is the number associated with a point on the number line called?
The “coordinate” of the point.
In subtraction, what do we subtract from what, and what is the answer called?
Subtract the subtrahend from the minuend, to find the difference.
What are inverse operations?
Operations that will undo each other (e.g. addition and subtraction.)
In division, what is divided by what?
The dividend is divided by the divisor.
What is an algorithm?
A step-by-step process to solve a particular type of problem (e.g. a division algorithm is a procedure for solving a division problem.)
