what are the characteristics of a profession
- Disciplined group
- Adhere to ethical standards
- accepted by the public as having special knowledge
- education and training at a high level
- self reflection and self improvement- keep up to date with knowledge
what is autonomy
the right or ability of an individual to make their OWN decisions based on their own values and belief
what does collegial, altruism and autonomy, beneficence mean
collegial- respect colleagues abilities and work towards a common purpose
altruistic- oriented towards service rather than profit
autonomy-
beneficence- to do good and keep best interest of clients in mind
example of having respect for autonomy
Transfer care to someone else
patients have the right to make decisions (autonomy)
even though you might not agree with the decisions- your own ethics (but have to respect their right their autonomy)
what is the purpose of regulatory bodies and who do they protect
- colleges they protect the PUBLIC
- ensure partitioner is properly qualified, competent and continues to meet the standards
- establish standards and ethics and standards that everyone in the profession must follow
if a profession is regulated to use your job title you must
- be registered under the college- proper regulatory body
- have a license

OCT- Ontario college of teachers
CDO- college of dieticians of Ontario
OHEA- Ontario home economics association
what are professional associations
- advance the interest of the profession
- advocate for the profession
what’s the benefits of professional associations
- networking - meet people in the profession, lots of opportunities, build connections
- job opportunities
- good on resume
- shows that are invested in the profession
what are the responsibilities of belonging to a professional association
- high standards
- provide input
- volunteer
- credible and reliable source of information
what are regulatory bodies important
- ensure quality and safety - qualified individuals can practice
- accountability- professionals stay accountable for their actions, maintain integrity
- public confidence- helps public feel more comfortable with care
