Q

What’s the difference between “break”, “broke” and “broken”?

A

Break = infinitive and present form. Example: My watch breaks all the time. = Ma montre brise tout le temps.

Broke = simple past of the verb “break”. Example: I broke a glass last night while doing the dishes.

Broken = the past participle of “break”. The past participle is used to form the present perfect tense (Example: I have broken a lot of dishes in my life.). It is also used to build a sentence in the passive form. Example: I can’t read the time because my watch is broken. I couldn’t read the time because my watch was broken.

Q

Any” vs “no

We use “no” when something is inexistent. Example: I have no time for that. I have nowehere to go. Some people have no money to buy basic things.

The word “any” means the same as “no” only when there is a form of negation in the sentence. Example: I don’t have any time for that. I don’t have anywehere to go. Some people don’t have any money to buy basic things.

However, the word “any”, when not combined with a negation, means “n’importe…”, Example: Anybody can do that. = N’importe qui peut faire ça. You can buy bread anywhere. = Tu peux acheter du pain n’importe où. You can work with anyone. = Tu peux travailler avec n’importe qui.
