When do we use the modal verb “can” in English?
1) When making a polite request. E.g.:
Can you check my drawing, please?
2) When asking for permission: Can I leave at 3 o’clock today?
3) To talk about an ability: I can complete my work today. I **can’t **modify a 3D drawing but JP can. I can’t sign official papers for the clients but Seb can.
Don’t forget: When talking about an ability, we can also use “be able to”. E.g.: I am able to complete my work today. I am not able to modify a 3D drawing but JP is. I am not able to sign official papers for the clients but Seb is.
Also, since “can” is not a verb but a “modal” verb, it cannot be conjugated. We then have to use “be able to”
Examples:
- I want to be able to write better in English. (not “I want to can write.”)
- I have to be able to do some mathematics calculations. (not “I have to can do….)
- I have to be able to prioritize. (not “I have to can prioritize…”)
- I have to be able to check and correct my mistakes. (not “I have to can check...”)
When do we use the modal verb “could”?
1) As the past of “can” (Example: I could run 10 km when I was 20 years old but I can’t anymore.)
2) For poilte requests: (Example: Could you do me a big favor?)
3) When asking for permission: Could I use your phone?
5) 4) As the conditional of “can”. Example: I could never do your job! I don’t have the patience for that!
NOTE: The negative of “could” is “could not” or “couldn’t”.
When and how do we use the modal verb “should” (or its negative “shouldn’t”)?
1) For advice. E.g.: You should take some Spanish lessons at university. You shoudn’t watch so much TV. What do you think I should do?
2) For assumptions. E.g.: He should be here soon. He should be here any minute. It shouldn’t be too long.
Don’t forget!
Present: I should do my homework.
Past: I should have done my homework.
Present: I should travel more.
Past: I should have travelled more when I was younger.
Present: I **should speak **more.
