what is social inequality?
used to describe the relatively enduring social divisions of inequality caused by differences in age, gender, social class, disability and ethnicity
what is max weber’s definition of “life chances”?
peoples opportunities for obtaining material goods, health care, education, employment, services and cultural experiences. can link to living standards. individuals may have different chances of accessing resources in society.
what is economic capital?
refers to material wealth, money and property
what is cultural capital by bourdieu?
social classes have different sets of tastes, preferences and linguistics competence, and parents pass these down to children
what is human capital?
refers to particular job, skills, knowledge and qualifications. regarded as form of investment for future rewards
what is social capital by putnam?
describes the social networks and levels of trust in communities (old boy school networks)
what is income?
flow of money a person receives within a given time period. split into original and disposable income
what is wealth?
refers to total stock of economic resources and possessions at a fixed point in time. measure of monetary value of assets. eg. shares, savings, land, buildings
