Lesson 9 - Providence and Predestination Flashcards
Define Divine Providence
God’s sovereign control and direction of events in the world.
Implications of Divine Providence
- ) God has a good and wise plan for his creation
- ) God’s plan was formulated in eternity.
- ) God’s plan is comprehensive: it concerns every event within the creation.
- ) God’s plan includes the free choices of his creatures – both good and evil.
- ) God’s plan is not dependent on contingencies in the creation beyond his control.
- ) God’s plan originated ultimately and entirely in his own free decree.
- ) God’s plan is effectual and infallible: every event occurs in accordance with His plan.
Explain the difference between primary and secondary causes?
Primary (ultimate) - God is the ultimate cause of all things but he is not the proximate cause of evil. Humans are because they are responsible. God uses the evil for the ultimate cause of His glory.
Why is providence not a form of fatalism?
God does not work against the will, but through the will.
What is compatibilism?
Both God’s sovereignty and human responsibility are compatible. Freedom and responsibility are compatible with sovereignty.
What are 3 biblical texts that teach God’s sovereignty over human choices?
Proverbs 16:9; 1 Corinthians 15:10; Genesis 50:20; Acts 4:27-28
What are the 3 key distinctions that need to be made in answering objections to the Reformed doctrine of providence?
- ) Between primary (ultimate) and secondary (proximate) causes.
- ) Between divine and human intentions
- ) Between responsibility and culpability
What is the difference between compatibilist and incompatibilist view of human freedom?
Compatibilist: freedom and responsibility are compatible with Sovereignty.
What is the debate between Calvinists and Arminians about?
- not about whether God elects, but on the basis of which God elects.
- not about whether salvation depends on God’s choice or our choice, but on which one is ultimate?
Pastoral implications of Predestination?
- ) Evangelism
- ) Preaching
