Lesson 9- Institutional Care Flashcards
What is institutional care?
It is a type of RESIDENTIAL CARE for large groups of children.
Some institutions children are raised in include:
-Children homes
-Hostels
Why is it bad if children adopt the rules and norms of the institution they are in?
It could impair FUNCTIONING and could lead to DEINDIVIDUATION (loss of personal identity)
What was the procedure of Rutter et al. study of Romanian orphans in 2010
The study involved 165 ROMANIAN orphans, who spent their early life in orphanages before being adopted, and therefore have been subjected to the effects of institutionalisation.
-The adoptees were tested at regular intervals (ages 4,6, 11 and 15) to asses their PHYSICAL,COGNITIVE and SOCIAL development.
What was the control group in the procedure?(🇬🇧)
52 British children adopted before the age of 6 MONTHS
What were the findings of the study?
The Romanian orphans lagged behind their British counterparts on all measures of PHYSICAL,COGNITIVE and SOCIAL development.
HOWEVER…
Romanian orphans adopted BEFORE the age of 6 MONTHS had caught up with their British counterparts.
But a significant number of individuals adopted AFTER 6 months still had significant deficits at age FOUR
What were the conclusions of the study?
If the children were adopted BEFORE six months and receive SENSITIVE PARENTING
