What is the Richter scale?
A measurements of (height) Amplitude of waves from an earthquake (Measures earthquake energy)
Why is the Richter scale an absolute scale?
Wherever an earthquake is recorded it will measure the same on the Richter scale
What hazard does the Mercalli scale measure?
Earthquake
What is the Mercalli scale?
Measures experienced impacts of an earthquake. Based on a series of key responses: people awakening, movement of furniture damage to structures.
(Rates earthquake on the level of damage at a certain place)
Why is the Mercalli scale a relative scale?
People experience different amounts of shaking in different places
What hazard does the movement magnitude scale measure?
Earthquake
What is the movement magnitude scale?
A modern measure used by seismologists to describe earthquakes in terms of energy released. The magnitude is based on the seismic movement of the earthquake
How is the movement magnitude scale calculated?
The amount of slip on the fault area affected and an earth-rigidity factor (each level of magnitude is about 32 times more than last)
What hazard does the volcanic explosivity index measure?
Volcanic eruptions
what is the volcanic explosivity index?
A measure of the explosiveness of a volcano eruption.
How is the volcanic explosivity index calculated?
volume of products ejected, height of eruption cloud and qualitative observations
