Lesson 8 - psychodynamic explanations Flashcards
what is the last psychodynamic aspect of personality to develop
the superego
when does the superego develop
at the end of the phallic stage of psychosexual development at 3-6 years old
what does the superego do
goals, feelings, aspect of personality, rationality
three types of inadequate superego
weak, deviant, over harsh
weak superego
supergo is weak due to failure to identify fully with a same sex parent
deviant superego
superego is deviant due to identification with a deviant same sex parent
over harsh superego
an overhears superego i excessively punitive, the person is crippled by guilt and anxiety. crimes are committed to fulfil unconscious desire for punishment
+ evaluation of inadequate superego
+ this theory combines innate drives such as those in the id (nature) and the effects of early experience (nurture)
- evaluation of inadequate superego
- lack of falsifiability. id and ego are unconscious and can’t be tested
-there is no evidence that children raised without a same sex parent offend more than children who do - if kids raised by deviant parents commit crime it could be due to genetics or learning rather than a deviant superego
