Lesson 7: Ecological niches Flashcards
What is a specialist species?
a species with a narrow ecological niche
What is an example of a specialist species?
giant panda
What is a generalist species?
species with a broad ecological niche
What is an example of a generalist species?
black rats
What is an ecological niche?
the role and position a species has in its environment
What are the three modes of respiration?
- obligate aerobes
- obligate anaerobes
- facultative anaerobes
What are obligate anaerobes?
cannot survive with oxygen
What are obligate aerobes?
requires oxygen to respire
What are facultative anaerobes?
can live with or without oxygen (fermentation)
What are the methods of nutrition in bacteria and eukarya?
photo-synthetic, heterotrophic, mixotrophic, holozoic and saprotrophic nutrition
What is holozoic nutrition?
internal digestion of food
What is saprotrophic nutrition?
external digestion of food.
How does saprotrophic nutrition work using mushrooms as an example?
mushrooms release digestive enzymes on food and absorb through skin
What are the methods of nutrition in archaea?
- chemosynthesis
- photosynthesis
- methanogenesis
What is chemosynthesis?
using oxidation of inorganic chemicals to create own food.
What is methanogenesis?
uses CO2 to produce methane gas
Where can methanogens be found?
digestive tracts in cows
What are hominins?
humans and their ancestors
How has our dentition changed over time due to our diet?
once more high energy meat was consumed, teeth count and jaw size reduced.
What are some adaptations of herbivores for feeding on plants (insects)?
strong pair of mandibles
What are some adaptations of plants to avoid herbivory?
- toxic
- thick + rigid leaves
- sharp thorns
What are some physical adaptations of predators to kill prey?
- speed + agility
- sharp claws + teeth
- digestive system that can break down raw meat
- fine tuned senses
What are some chemical adaptations of predators to kill prey?
releases chemicals to paralyse or poison preys
What are some behavioural adaptations of predators to kill prey?
- hunt in packs
- create signals to tempt and trap prey
