Lesson 7 Flashcards
Abnormal or difficult labor
Dystocia
Four main components of labor process
The power (uterine contraction)
The passenger (fetus)
The passageway (birth canal)
Psyche (womans perception)
Obstetrical forceps are steel instruments constructed of two blade that slide together
Forceps delivery
Types of forceps
Fenestrated or Pseudofenestraded blades
True fenestration
Pseudofenestration
Have an opening within or a depression along the blade
Fenestrated or Pseudofenestrated blades
Reduces the degree of head slippage during forceps rotation
True fenestration
It can increase friction between the blade and vaginal wall
True fenestration
The forceps blade is smooth on the outer maternal side but indented on the inner surface
Pseudofenestration
Types of forceps application
Cephalic Application
Pelvic Application
Cephalo-pelvic Application
The forceps is applied on the sides of the fetal head in the mento vertical diameter of
Cephalic Application
The forceps is applied along the maternal pelvic wall irrespective to the position of the head
Pelvic Application
The ideal application and possible when the occiput is directly anterior or posterior or in the direct mento anterior
Cephalo-Celvic Application
A forceps application with easier application but carries a risk of fetal injuries
Pelvic application
Usually indicates that the application is incorrect
Difficulty in locking
Between contractions, check the:
Fetal heart rate
Application of the forceps
