Different Types of Mental Disorder
Characterized by persistent
disturbance of eating that result in
altered consumption or absorption of
food and significantly impair physical
health or psychosocial functioning.
This includes
nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-
eating.
Studies have shown that this
disorder are caused by genetic,
personality, cognitive, cultural, an

compulsive disorder which are all
characterized by excessive fear,
anxiety, or avoidance behavior.
o Biological, cognitive, and
environmental factors may
contribute to the development of
anxiety disorders.
Anxiety Disorder
o Characterized by hopelessness,
lack of energy in their usual
activities, crying for unexplained
reasons, and low self-esteem.
o They experience loss of interest
in their activities, cannot make
decisions, and tend to blame
and hurt others.
o Caused by heredity,
environmental factors, and
stressors
Depressive Disorder
o Formerly referred to as manic
depressive illness, is a mood disorder
with two extremes: depressed (“low”)
and manic (“high”).
o When depressed, a person feels
persistently sad, hopeless and
lethargic, and may feel suicidal,
among other symptoms
o When manic, a person becomes
overly elated, more irritable, requires
less sleep, makes grand plans and
may impulsively engage in potentially
dangerous behavior.
Bipolar Disorder
o Characterized by repeated pattern
of behaviors in which the basic rights
of others are violated.
o They violate policies, rules and
regulations.
o Teenagers who have this disorder are
commonly labeled as delinquent
(Santrock, 2012).
o Juvenile delinquency refers to any
illegal act by a minor, and it
emphasizes the criminal as well as the
legal aspects of the behavior.
Conduct Disorder
o An enduring pattern of inner
experience and behavior that
deviates markedly from the
expectation of the individual’s
culture, is pervasive and inflexible,
has an onset in adolescence, is
stable over time, and leads to
distress or impairment.
o Displays deviant behaviors, may
be oversensitive or insensitive,
rigid, and self-centered.
Personality Disorder
demonstrate a pattern of
distrust and suspiciousness on the motives of the people
around them
Paranoid Personality Disorder
is manifested by the
individual’s disregard or violation of the rights of others.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
is manifested by individuals
who show excessive emotionality and attention-seeking
behaviors.
Histrionic Personality Disorder
occurs when one exhibits
pattern of grandiosity, they are self-centered, and their need
for admiration is strong.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
is evident when individuals
show a pattern of social inhibition, feelings of
inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to negative
evaluation.
Avoidant Personality Disorder
is manifested when
individuals demonstrate a pattern of submissive and
clinging behavior related to an excessive need to be
taken care of
Dependent Personality Disorder
is manifested
by pattern of preoccupation with orderliness,
perfectionism, and control.
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder
means “split mind”.
o usually
characterized by the deterioration in
personal, social, and occupational
functioning due to bizarre emotions
and abnormal perceptions.
o Abnormalities in delusions,
hallucinations. Disorganized thinking
(speech), and abnormal motor
behavior.
o Experience loss contact with reality or
“psychosis”.
SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDER
Changes in one’s cognition,
emotions, and behavior may
result if there is an excessive
use of substances
o Drug dependency or Drug
abuse may be developed if
individuals regularly take
substances (alcohol,
caffeine, marijuana,
tobacco).
Substance-Related Disorder
o Parenting style
o Parents who often fight in front
of kids may have lasting effects
even as they reach
adolescence.
o Displacement
o Separation of a family member
o Marital breakup
Family Situations
o Because of poverty, some
families do not have money to
buy food and medicine.
o Unavailability of jobs
o Teenagers from high-income
families have access to
gadget/internet, smoking,
drinking and using illegal drugs.

psychological and

- seek social and emotional support
- invest on your talents
- use positive coping strategies
