Lesson 6: Vocabulary Flashcards
Galactic Disk
Much of the matter in galaxies is found rotating around the center in a relatively flat disk
Globular Clusters
A large compact spherical star cluster
Cepheid variable star
Stars that get brighter and dimmer in a regular, repeating pattern
Black Hole
An object that’s strong enough gravitational pull that not even light could escape
Event horizon
The boundary of a black hole
Active galaxies
Galaxies that are brighter than normal galaxies
Galactic Nuclei
A compact region at the center of a galaxy that has a much higher than normal luminosity
Seyfert Galaxies
The first active galaxies that have very bright, starlike galactic nuclei and re names after Carl Seyfert
Quasar
Objects that appear like stars but are moving away from us at such high velocities
Galaxy
Large group of stars
