Some examples include headlines, captions, titles, writing styles

Codes related to sounds
Audio COdes
Codes use to convey symbolic rather than literal meanings

Analysing Sound
Dialogue, Music, Sound Effects
Dialogue
Speech/words, Accent, Tone
Music
Pace/Tone, Instruments, Lyrics
We can see the source of the sound
On-screen sound
The source of the sound come from outside the frame
Off-screen sound
Sound which is part of the film world you are watching, you can see the source of the sound
Diegetic Sound
Not part of the film, it has been edited in
Non-Diegetic Sound
Sound which mirrors the mood of what we are seeing
Parallel Sound
Sounds that do not fit the scene
Contrapuntal Sounds
Symbolic Codes
Setting, Mise En Scene, Acting, Color
Conventions
Form Conventions, Story Conventions, Genre COnventions
are social in nature. What this means is that these codes live outside the media product themselves, but would be understood in similar ways in the ‘real life’ of the audience.
