What is VAT
An indirect tax levied/charged by the government on the consumption of goods and rendering services
How Does NAMRA receive VAT
Consumer pays VAT to vendor and it is the vendors responsibility to pay VAT t government receiver of revenue

Entities with an annual turnover of more than 1 million rand
What is output tax
A vendor must levy VAT at 15 percent on transactions as part of their price
What must be refelected on tax invoice for it to be considered valid
- The words “tax invoice” in a prominent place
- Name, address and VAT registration number of the supplier
- Name and address of recipient
- Serial number and date of issue
- Accurate description of good and or services
- Quantity or volume of goods or services supplied
- Price and VAT
- The VAT number of the recipient will also be required on a full tax invoice if the person is a vendor
What are standard rate transactions
Transactions which are subjected to VAT at a rate of 15 percent
What is input tax
When a vendor purchases a good/service from another vendor and there is VAT on the transaction, the purchaser can claim the VAT from SARS
How do you calculate VAT payable
Output tax - input tax
What will happen if VAT payment is made late or the applicable return is not submitted on time
SARS may levy penalties and fines
