Lesson 5: The Importance of ‘Aqeedah | Part 2 Flashcards
Continuation of the previous lesson
FEAR OF SHIRK
**
- Remember˺ when Abraham prayed, “My Lord! Make this city ˹of Mecca˺ secure, and keep me and my children away from the worship of idols.
- (Ibrahim 35)
**
- My Lord! They have caused many people to go astray. So whoever follows me is with me, and whoever disobeys me—then surely You are ˹still˺ All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
- (Ibrahim 36)
The ummah will return to shirk
{ هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَى وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ}
أَنَّ ذَلِكَ تَامًّا قَالَ ” إِنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ يَبْعَثُ اللَّهُ رِيحًا طَيِّبَةً فَتَوَفَّى كُلَّ مَنْ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ حَبَّةِ خَرْدَلٍ مِنْ إِيمَانٍ فَيَبْقَى مَنْ لاَ خَيْرَ فِيهِ فَيَرْجِعُونَ إِلَى دِينِ آبَائِهِمْ ”A’isha reported:I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: The (system) of night and day would not end until the people have taken to the worship of Lat and ‘Uzza. I said: Allah’s Messenger, I think when Allah has revealed this verse:” He it is Who has sent His Messenger with right guidance, and true religion, so that He may cause it to prevail upon all religions, though the polytheists are averse (to it)” (ix. 33), it implies that (this promise) is going to be fulfilled. Thereupon he (Allah’s Apostle) said: It would happen as Allah would like. Then Allah would send the sweet fragrant air by which everyone who has even a mustard grain of faith in Him would die and those only would survive who would have no goodness in them. And they would revert to the religion of their forefathers. - This is occurring even now, there would be a nuclear physicist who worships a piece of plastic, atheists who worship their desires, all of this connects to
My Lord! They have caused many people to go astray
The affect of ‘Aqeedah on the family
keep me and my children away from the worship of idols.
Connected to this, is the following hadith:
It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed said:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out to us when we were discussing Dajjal (False Christ) and said: ‘Shall I not tell you of that which I fear more for you than Dajjal?’ We said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Hidden polytheism, when a man stands to pray and makes it look good because he sees a man looking at him.’”
The word خفي, that shirk is not always obvious. The detractors of Aqeedah would say you’re teaching something that can be taught quickly, this is an idol, don’t worship. The answer to this is the following Hadith and specifically الشرك الخفي
Shirk is more hidden in this Ummah than the crawling of a black ant on a solid rock in a dark night
And another answer is that ‘Aqeedah/Tawheed is much more than that and so on.
The famous dua we say to keep away from shirk
O Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I associate anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I know not
And what we can take from this is that it’s very easy to fall into mistakes in Aqeedah without knowing
Issue of blind following
And when it is said to them, “Follow what Allāh has revealed,” they say, “Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing.” Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?
This issue of taqleed in Aqeedah, is amongst the greatest reasons of why we learn ‘Aqeedah and free ourselves from this. The disbelievers would blindly follow their forefathers in shirk, and this is a blameworthy taqleed (in the fiqh classes when it’s praiseworthy, blameworthy etc this will be discussed further)
It is مَذْمُومٌ عَلَى الإِطْلَاقِ blameworthy without exception.
The key to enter Jannah, which is لا إله إلا الله, to understand it, to know what’s correct in Aqeedah, what’s permissible and not, and so on is based upon learning aqeedah. For example, تَشَيع, shiaism, and a person lives in a Shia country, and has parents who exaggerate in their beliefs, worship grave’s, curses the sahaba how will they ever learn Aqeedah properly, what’s wrong or wrong, clean themselves, even if they clean themselves with their Aql عقل such as if the sahaba are cursed the prophet was deficient etc, they won’t be able to cleanse themselves from their bodies.
Look at a standard wedding from the Indian subcontinent, many of the customs are from Hinduism, how would one what’s allowed or not allowed unless they study the beliefs of Islam, the beliefs islam set out in terms of belief? Of course other aspects like fiqh is included as well, as the subjects in islam are all مُتَرَابِطَة, tied together.
Some may say why give an example of a wedding? This is something that is from فروع الفقهية, a subsidiary matter not from the roots. But as we said, just like correct actions are built upon correct Aqeedah, likewise incorrect actions are built upon an incorrect Aqeedah.
And with this, Islamic Aqeedah is pure, so whenever you see a sect that deviates from this pure belief, it always got imported from other groups. Chief among them the Jews and the Christian’s as in The Hadith
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“You will most certainly follow the ways of those who came before you, arm’s length by arm’s length, forearm’s length by forearm’s length, hand span by hand span, until even if they entered a hole of a mastigure (lizard) you will enter it too.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, (do you mean) the Jews and the Christians?” He said: “Who else?”
The people who are ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ, and then expands to others such as atheism Buddhism and so on. It never started from islam, always from the outside and came imported. This is why there’s many ahadith regarding taking the Jews and Christian’s as allies.
And from the ayah, those who follow their forefathers are truly lost, as had they truly been intelligent, they would’ve sought to be guided and guide their families, as that would be from بر الوالدين
the Hadith
Anas reported:
Verily, a person said: Messenger of Allah, where is my father? He said: (He) is in the Fire. When he turned away, he (the Holy Prophet) called him and said: Verily my father and your father are in the Fire.
In this Hadith, did the prophet ﷺ leave what ﷲ ﷻ gave him and said he was upon that which his father and grandfather abdul mutallib (who’s name was spread across Arabia) and say I take what ﷲ sent down and keep into account abdul mutallib? (Point of benefit: The prophet used to say often that he was the grandson of abdul mutallib such as the Hadith:
**
Narrated Abu ‘Is-haq:
*Al-Bara’ was asked while I was listening, “Did you flee (before the enemy) along with the Prophet (ﷺ) on the day of (the battle of) Hunain?” He replied, “As for the Prophet, he did not (flee). The enemy were good archers and the Prophet (ﷺ) was saying, “I am the Prophet (ﷺ) undoubtedly; I am the son of `Abdul Muttalib.”
*
Despite that, he didn’t follow his grandfather or father’s practice. The knowledge of islam separates one from the corrupt practices that were not upon Islam.
The first command and the first prohibition
O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous
- This was the first command, to worship ﷲ ﷻ
**
[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allāh equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].
---
- This is the first prohibition, which is to not associate partners with all.
- So from this, the significance of Aqeedah is clear
-
- the first command is related to worship ﷲ ﷻ which is Tawheed- part of Aqeedah
- First prohibition is regarding not making partners and rivals which is dealt with Aqeedah
Shirk destroys every good deed
And We shall turn to whatever deeds they (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners) did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust.
The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] from what they earned a [single] thing. That is what is extreme error.
This is a mistake in Aqeedah, as a result all their good deeds are ruined, and they are unable to hold onto a single good deed that’ll benefit them.
there is this story of a man named Abdullah ibn jud’an read more here:Commentary ~ The Story Of Ibn Jud’an
Despite this, the following Hadith says this:
Aisha (RA) reported: I said, “O Messenger of Alla , Ibn Jud’an used to uphold the ties of kinship and feed the poor. Will any of that benefit him on the Day of Resurrection?” The Prophet ﷺ answered, “No. Indeed, on no day did he ever say: O my lord, forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense.
Despite all of the good he did, it wouldn’t benefit him in the slightest, as he never believed in ﷲ ﷻ, never asked for forgiveness, as his ‘Aqeedah was not correct, and his deeds became هَبَآءًۭ مَّنثُورًا scattered dust.
They have certainly disbelieved who say, “Allāh is the Messiah, the son of Mary” while the Messiah has said, “O Children of Israel, worship Allāh, my Lord and your Lord.” Indeed, he who associates others with Allāh - Allāh has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
Look how ﷲ ﷻ addresses his prophet ﷺ
And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), as it was to those (Allâh’s Messengers) before you: “If you join others in worship with Allâh, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers.”
All of the good he did, that which he did in a moment which is greater than all the good we do if we all came together, his prophethood, would be in vain, and ﷲ would destroy every single one of his deeds.
As such, in the very next ayah ﷲ ﷻ says
Rather, worship [only] Allāh and be among the grateful.
Again, this tells us when we mistakes in Aqeedah the danger is حُبُوطُ الْعَمَل, that your deeds are wiped out, and you lose everything you’ve done that is good
As such, there is no good that is done that is accepted unless their Aqeedah is accepted
It may be the case that a person makes a mistake in Aqeedah and be from among the people of Jannah, but what’s necessary is that it isn’t something which reaches the level of shirk, or kufr as such this is the greatest danger and not a single one of your deeds is accepted, and even if one is among those who enter paradise with a mistake, they meet ﷲ ﷻ with the greatest of sins. And this enters the statement of ﷲ ﷻ
…Do you say about Allāh that which you do not know?
Some scholars said the greatest of the major sins after shirk is to say about ﷲ that which you don’t know.
Virtue of Tawheed
Mu‘ādh (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I was riding behind the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) on a donkey called ‘Ufayr. The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) asked: “O Mu‘ādh, do you know what Allah’s right upon His servants is, and what the right of His servants upon Him is?” I replied: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “Allah’s right upon His servants is that they should worship Him and associate no partners with Him. And the right of the servants upon Allah is that He should not punish whoever associates no partners with Him.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, should I not inform the people of this good news?” He said: “Do not inform them of it, lest they depend on it solely.”
The reason the messenger ﷺ didn’t want the people to be aware is because it could cause issues, such as a person commiting zina and since they’re aqeedah is correct, they wouldn’t care. So musdh held onto this until he felt this knowledge wouldn’t be passed on, and told a group of people this, so they could work hard, and this Hadith is a virtue if Tawheed, and Tawheed is apart of ‘Aqeedah.
Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al-‘As:
that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Indeed Allah will distinguish a man from my Ummah before all of creation on the Day of Judgement. Ninety-nine scrolls will be laid out for him, each scroll is as far as the eye can see, then He will say: ‘Do you deny any of this? Have those who recorded this wronged you?’ He will say: ‘No, O Lord!’ He will say: Do you have an excuse?’ He will say: ‘No, O Lord!’ So He will say: ‘Rather you have a good deed with us, so you shall not be wronged today.” Then He will bring out a card (Bitaqah); on it will be: “I testify to La Ilaha Illallah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.” He will say: ‘Bring your scales.’ He will say: ‘O Lord! What good is this card next to these scrolls?’ He will say: ‘You shall not be wronged.’ He said: ‘The scrolls will be put on a pan (of the scale), and the card on (the other) pan: the scrolls will be light, and the card will be heavy, nothing is heavier than the Name of Allah.
The point from this Hadith, the us is virtue of Aqeedah, we study in it the testimony of faith, it’s conditions it’s meanings it’s regulations, the essence of it and its implementation.
Point of benefit: the following Hadith is hadith qudusi (not qudsi that is a place )
On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Allah the Almighty said: O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it. It was related by at-Tirmidhi (also by Ahmad ibn Hanbal). Its chain of authorities is sound
From this Hadith we get 2 benefits
- Knowing Tawheed and shirk
- Knowing ﷲ ﷻ names and attributes- by knowing his ﷻ names and attributes we have hope in ﷲ ﷻ as we know he the merciful, the forgiving and so on
why do we say ﷲ ﷻ and his messenger ﷺ know best, isn’t that equating ﷲ ﷻ to his messenger ﷺ?
The simple answer is this is said when the messenger ﷺ is speaking from revelation, and since revelation comes from ﷲ ﷻ we can say ﷲ ﷻ and his messenger das know best ﷲ knows best as he knows everything, and the messenger ﷺ knows best because ﷲ has given him the revelation.*

** - Narrated Ibn `Abbas:
- The Prophet (ﷺ) once came out to us and said, “Some nations were displayed before me. A prophet would pass in front of me with one man, and another with two men, and another with a group of people. and another with nobody with him. Then I saw a great crowd covering the horizon and I wished that they were my followers, but it was said to me, ‘This is Moses and his followers.’ Then it was said to me, ‘Look’’ I looked and saw a big gathering with a large number of people covering the horizon. It was said, “Look this way and that way.’ So I saw a big crowd covering the horizon. Then it was said to me, “These are your followers, and among them there are 70,000 who will enter Paradise without (being asked about their) accounts. “ Then the people dispersed and the Prophet (ﷺ) did not tell who those 70,000 were. So the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) started talking about that and some of them said, “As regards us, we were born in the era of heathenism, but then we believed in Allah and His Apostle . We think however, that these (70,000) are our offspring.” That talk reached the Prophet (ﷺ) who said, “These (70,000) are the people who do not draw an evil omen from (birds) and do not get treated by branding themselves and do not treat with Ruqya, but put their trust (only) in their Lord.” then ‘Ukasha bin Muhsin got up and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Am I one of those (70,000)?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Yes.” Then another person got up and said, “Am I one of them?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “ ‘Ukasha has anticipated you.”

The point of this is, if you want to be from among these, you must learn your Aqeedah or you will not be able to be included. This Hadith needs study, just like Aqeedah
