Lesson 5 - The Homefront Flashcards
How did the Canadian Government try to raise money for the war?
To raise money, the Canadian government decided to sell victory bonds.
What are victory bonds?
Victory bonds are an investment sold by the Canadian government to ordinary Canadians in WW1.
How did the Canadian Government try to get Canadians to save food and supplies for soldiers fighting in Europe?
The government also encouraged Canadians to save food and supplies to ensure that there was enough for soldiers fighting in Europe by encouraging a policy called rationing, basically they tried to use emotional persuasion tactics to try and convince Canadians to ration.
What is conscription?
Conscription is a law that requires all able-bodied males of a certain age to go to war for their country.
Why was conscription so divisive in Canada?
It caused what is called the conscription crisis, which was when French Canadians (especially from Quebec) did not want to go to the war for Britain (due to Imperialism).
What extremely important role did women play in WW1
To make weapons, Canadian factories had to shift their focus to making ammunition and weapons. Because many younger Canadian male adults were away fighting, a new source of labour had to be found: women. Many women entered the workforce at this time, which was a change from before the war. Thousands of Canadian women worked in factories, doing the important job of manufacturing weapons for the war.
What is propaganda?
Propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.
What is an example of propaganda?
“Send more men.” “Back him up.” “This is your flag. Fight for it.” Over a century ago, posters with these messages plastered the streets of Canadian towns and cities, rallying support for the war effort.
