Q

Imagine you have been marooned on a desert island. How could you make drinking water from sea water

A

A Solar Still

  1. fill tank with water
  2. Evaporation

Q

what are the 3 steps for Distillation

A
  1. evaporation
  2. condensation
  3. collection
The solution is heated so that the liquid evaporates and is turned into a gas. Everything else is left behind.
The gas cools in the condenser and turns back into a liquid, which can then be collected.

Q

Fractional Distillation

A

Fractional distillation is the separation of a mixture into its component parts. Chemical compounds are separated by heating them into a temperature at which one or more fractions of the mixture will vaporize.

Q

how Fractional Distillation works

A

Air goes into the cooling unit.

The air is cooled down.

Water solidifies at 0oC and is removed.

Carbon dioxide solidifies at -79oC and is removed.

Air turns to a liquid.

Liquid air goes into the fractionating column.

Liquid oxygen is removed at the bottom of the fractionating column.

Nitrogen gas is removed from the top of the fractionating column
