Circoviridae
General description
circular single-stranded DNA
non-enveloped with icosahedral symmetry
stable in the environment at pH
3 to pH 9
resists heating at
60°C for 30 minutes
Clinical infestations
1.Chicken anemia virus : or CAV
2. Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV 2)
Chickenanemia virus : or CAV, affects young birds worldwide, resulting to
aplastic anaemia and generalized lymphoid atrophy
Affected birds are
depressed, anorexic and pale affecting weight gains
Transmission:
-orizontal (oro-faecal route) and
-vertical (thru the
eggs) occur
Infected poultry viremia, and sheds virus fo
3-4 weeks following
infection
Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV 2): associated with
with postweaning multisystemic
wasting syndrome (PMWS),
porcine dermatitis and
nephropathy syndrome
Control
: biosecurity, and vaccine are available
Diagnosis: to confirm infection with
h PCV 2
Threegenotypes are recognized:
PCV-2a, PCV-2b and PCV-2c
, demonstration of the
virus by serology
(ELISA, indirect immunoflourescence)
