Lesson 5: Assumption Sufficient & Necessary Flashcards
Question stem
will tell you your task in the AC
Assumption SUF
AC will prove the assumption to be true thereby proving the conclusion to be true
Assumption NEC
AC will provide info that is needed for the assumption to be true
timing
90 seconds per question (60% of time in the argument and 40% in the ACs)
** identify the assumption before heading to the AC
Assumption SUF
need to ask yourself
Is it enough?
** the AC must be strong and broad enough (needs to be strong language)
Assumption NEC
need to ask yourself
Do I need this?
** need weak language in the correct AC
and use the negation test to kill the argument
if the negation kills the argument, then that is the correct answer
Assumption SUF
3 Steps
- read the question and ID question type
- argument analysis to find the assumption
- look for a fact in the AC that proves the conclusion of the argument true
(any piece of info that justifies the conclusion)
Assumption SUF
key words and phrases
- make the conclusion “follow logically”
- make the conclusion “properly drawn”
- “justify” the conclusion
Correct AC (SUF)
- Address the TICNIE (if one is present)
- fully prove every aspect of the conclusion
Assumption NEC
3 Steps
- read the question and ID question type
- argument analysis to find the assumption
- go to ACs
- look for a fact in the AC that is required by the conclusion
- need weak language to be the correct AC
- negation test will prove the AC to be correct if it kills the arguement
- look for a fact in the AC that is required by the conclusion
