VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Signs, objects, signals, and
words—help people
understand the world. They
provide clues to
understanding experiences
by conveying recognizable
meanings that are shared by
societies. Language is a ? system through which people communicate and through which culture is transmitted.
SYMBOLIC
Speech doesn’t have a singular
meaning but represents
different ideas, objects, or
individuals. happens when words
or statements have more than one
meaning and interpreted in different ways.
This makes language efficient to use.
AMBIGUOUS
There is no necessary
or natural relationship
between the words of
a given language and
the concepts that they
represent. There is no geometrical or physical
resemblance between word and meaning.
Words are arbitrary rather than iconic.
ARBITRARY
Words do not
always have to
correspond to a
tangible or
concrete object in
the physical world. language allows us to subjectively
describe an objective phenomenon, which,
although easier, often results to
miscommunication.
ABSTRACT
Each language
system has its own
set of rules. Learning
and speaking a
language requires
knowledge of these
rules. One common example would be the
grammar rules in English differs from the
Filipino grammar rules.
RULE-GOVERNED
It involves the use of
symbols other than written
or spoken language.
NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION
It refers to body motions and
positions.
- Also included facial expression.
KINESICS
It involves sense of
touch to convey
emotions.
HAPTICS
These are the materials
things or attached to our
bodies to express our
identities.
ARTIFACTS
We judge or evaluate others according to
their physical characteristics such as skin
color, height, weight, facial features, and
attractiveness among others.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
It refers to the use of
space and distance.
PROXEMICS
It refers to the elements of a
surrounding or setting. Colors,
lighting, arrangement of furniture,
design, among many others, affect
our actions.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
This is also a nonverbal symbol
associated with different
meanings, including anger,
awkwardness, or contentment.
SILENCE
It involves the vocal elements of
communication such as pitch, vocal quality,
volume, intonation, accent, pronunciation,
rhythm, pace, and sounds produced by
clearing the throat, murmuring, or sighing.
