Is Deafness a disability?
Here is where we diverge between the two cultures
Why would some people think Deafness is a disability?
Hearing is one of the five senses, if someone has one of these senses impaired they are labelled as having a disability
- Ex. Blindess
Why do Deaf people not like the stereotype of disabled?
Because it is associated with having inferior intelligence
- Some are not accepted by society because they have limited physical capabilities
What do Deaf people strive for?
They believe they only communicate differently from hearing people and strive for respect - to be treated fairly
Do Deaf people believe they have a disability?
No - just their communication is different than hearing people
- Their language, history, actions, and shared values point to a culture not a disability
So, how does this answer the question if Deafness is in fact a disability?
The answer lies in respecting one another, becoming aware of other perspectives, and how we react to them
