No
- This is why fingerspelling comes in, so we can spell the word
What is fingerspelling?
Fingerspelling is a specific function used to spell names, brand names, words without signs, etc.
When do we use fingerspelling?
When a word does not have a sign, for names, and/or if you do not know how to sign something
Is fingerspelling used in place of a sign?
No - It has 2 functions:
1) Spell proper names
2) To ask for a sign you don’t know
Where does your palm face when signing letters?
Outwards (away)
What are the 3 crucial elements of fingerspelling and reading someones fingerspelling?
1) Saying the word
2) Eye contact / where to focus
3) Context and closure
What should you do while you finger spell?
Say the sounds that go with each letter, not the name of each letter
Where to look when you finger spell?
Use your peripheral vision to watch someone finger spell but be sure to be making eye contact with the persons eyes
Why is context important?
It gives you an idea about the topic
- You can interpret what will be said/asked next
What are double letters divided into?
1) Contact letters
2) Open-handed letters
What are contact letters?
Letters in which your first and fingers touch one another
- A, E, M, N, O, S and T
What are open-handed letters?
Letters in which your fingers are up and your hand is outstretched
- B, C, D, F, G, H, I, K, L, P, Q, R, U, V, W, X, Y
What are exceptions to the double letters?
1) When a double occurs at the beginning or end of the word (i.e. eel or mall), your hand slides away from your body
2) When there are 2 Z’s, the letter Z is made with 2 fingers
