Confucianism
Confucianism believes in
ancestor worship and
human-centered virtues for
living a peaceful life. The golden
rule of Confucianism is “Do not
do unto others what you would
not want others to do unto you.”
There is debate over if
Confucianism is a religion
Confucius
a philosopher and
teacher who lived from 551 to 479
B.C.E. His thoughts on ethics, good
behavior, and moral character were
written down by his disciples in
several books, the most important
being the Lunyu.
Three main teachings of
Confucianism
-developed in the Spring and
Autumn Period during the Zhou dynasty
-ren (humaneness)
-yi
(righteousness)
- li (propriety/etiquette)
-zhong (loyalty)
- xiao (filial piety)
Taoism
-Living in the way of the
Tao or the universe.
-Free-flowing,
relative,
unitary, as well as
paradoxical view of almost
everything
The core teachings of
Taoism
inaction, simplicity and living in
harmony with nature
-law of unity of the two
opposite forces: yin and yang
Buddhism
The self is seen as an
illusion, born out of
ignorance, of trying to
hold and control things,
or human centered
needs; thus the self is also
the source of all these
sufferings
Buddhism
Buddhism is one of the world’s
largest religions and originated
2,500 years ago in India
The three (3) Main Buddhist Belief
Dukka: Life is painful and causes suffering.
Anitya: Life is in constant flux. Anitya or
“impermanence” means that life as we know
is a constantly flowing
Anatma: The self is changing.
The western culture
individualistic

person.

the group and social relations that
is given more importance than
individual needs and wants
