LESSON 5 Flashcards
Define cartridge case.
It is a tubular metallic or non-metallic container, which holds together the bullet, gun powder and primer. Another term of a cartridge case is “shell or “casing”.
Explain the functions of a cartridge case.
- It holds the bullet
- It serves as waterproof container for the gunpowder.
- It prevents the escape of the gases to the rear as the sidewalls of the cartridge case are forced against the walls of the chamber by the pressure.
ENUMERATE THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CARTRIDGE CASE
- Rim
- Primer pocket
- Vents or Flash hole
- The head and Body
- Neck
- Cannelures
- Crimp
- Base
- Shoulder
- Extract groove
is that part of of the cartridge case designed to limit the forward movement of the cartridge to the chamber.
Rim
part of the cartridge case which provides the means for the primer to be put in the central position
Primer pocket
Functions of Primer Pocket
a. hold the primer in place
b. to provide means to prevent the escape of gas
c. to provide solid support for primer anvil
is the hole at the bottom of the primer pocket that serves as the passage way for the priming mixture to impart an ignition to the propellant charge.
Vents or Flash hole
Part of the cartridge case that constitute the cork that plugs the breech of the barrel against the escape of the gas.
The head and body
Part of the cartridge case which is actually occupied by the bullet
Neck
It is the cylindrical groove in the outer surface of the cartridge case designed to secure the shell to the chamber as well as to prevent the bullet from being pushed down to the powder charge.
Cannelure
It is the cylindrical groove on the mouth of the shell
Crimp
Two (2) purposes of the Crimp:
- To hold the bullet and prevent it from being pulled out from the shell and
- Offer resistance to the bullet out of the neck to ensure the burning of the gun powder
Is the bottom portion of the cartridge case which contains the head stamp marking on the base of the shell containing the caliber, manufacturer, and in some cases including the date, trade name, and batch number.
Base
Part of the cartridge case which supports the neck of the cartridge which is evident in a bottleneck type
Shoulder
Is the circular groove near the rim of the shell designed for automatic withdrawal of the case from the chamber.
Extractor groove
