Lesson 4: Osmosis Flashcards
Osmosis
-the passage of water from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential through a selectively permeable membrane
pH
-pH is a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a substance
-the more hydrogen ions present the lower the pH
Water Potential
-measurement of the tendency of water to move
-represented the greek letter psi
-measured in united of pressure kilolpascals (kPa)
-pure water is said to have a water potential of 0
-all other solutions have a negative water potential
Water Potential (Solute)
-if a solute js added to pure water it will lower the water potential
-the more solute that id added the more negative it becomes
Hypotonic, Isotonic and Hypertonic
-hypotonic solution/ a solution of lower concentration of solutes (higher water potential)
-hypertonic solution/ a solution with higher concentration of solutes (lower water potential)
-isotonic solution/ a solution with the same concentration of solutes
