Lesson 4 - Latitudes and wind Flashcards
What is the coriolis effect?
Mass movement of air and water due to earth rotation left in north hemisphere
Where are the doldrums?
At the equator
Name the HFP cells
Hadley, Ferrell, polar
Which cell has reversed Flow
Ferrell
Which cell do you get northeast trade winds
Hadley North
Which cell do you get westerly winds
Ferrell
Which cell do you get easterly winds
Polar
Where are the horse-latitudes found?
30°
What is a gyre ?
Rotation of air where energy is transferred to water
What is an ekman spiral?
Deep water flows at different speeds as you get deeper. The coriolis effect causes a spiral pattern.
What is downwelling?
The vertical movement of water downwards due to converging surface currents.
What is upwelling?
Vertical movement of water upwards due to diverging currents
Langmuir circulation
Areas of convergence parallel to wind direction
What collects at locations of Langmuir circulation
Flotsam
What happens at the centre of gyres
Ekman flow causes water to form mounds.I his ready state is know as geostrophic flow
What is geostrophic flow?
An equilibrium of coriolis and gravity forces
