Lesson 4: Ionic, Covalent, and Metallic Bonding Flashcards
What is an ion?
An ion is a positive or negative charged atom.
How does an ionic bond form?
by the transfer of one or more electrons between atoms.
What properties do most ionic
compounds share?
Crystal lattice structure(takes a lot of energy to separate), Brittle (because of crystal lattice structure), good insulators, good conductors of electricity(covalent do not conduct electricity no matter the state)(ionic solids don’t conduct electricity well ionic liquids when separated conduct electricity).
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is formed by the equal sharing of electrons from both participating atoms.
What is a molecule?
two or more atoms connected by chemical bonds, which form the smallest unit of a substance that retains the properties of that substance.
What properties do most covalent
compounds share?
low boiling and melting points, do not conduct electricity, brittle solid forms
What is a metallic bond?
A bond exclusively between metals. It creates a bulk of metal atoms, all “clumped” together.
What properties do most metallic bonds
share?
malleable, ductile, high melting and boiling point, lustre.
