Lesson 4: Energy And Cellular Metabolism Flashcards
Define what the first law of thermodynamics is
Also known as the law of conservation of energy, it defines that the total amount of energy in the universe is constant
Define Respiration
It can be defined in two ways, Breathing and human metabolism (Breaking down things with oxygen)
Define the second law of thermodynamics
It can be defined as energy transfer or transformation, the total entropy (Or disorder) of an isolated system increases over time. Energy tends to spread out and become less organized meaning that systems will decay as time goes on.
What are the three types of work and two types of energy
Kinetic and Potential Energy
Chemical, Transport and Mechanical work
Define Catabolism and Anabolism
Catabolism —> Energy releasing breakdown
Anabolism —-> Energy-utilizing synthesis
What do enzymes do
Enzymes accelerate the conversion of the substrate into product and are not used up in the reaction
