describe Wallerstein’s world systems analysis
a measure of development between countries e.g. BRICS economies (brazil, russia, india, china, south africa) economic, social and political, treats world as a single unit. interrelated between 3 tiers- core, semi periphery, periphery
What are Wallerstein’s 3 main characteristics for a capitalist society
- a global market
- countries allowing for political and economic competition
- 3 tiers of countries- core (HIC), semi periphery, periphery (LIC)
What does Wallerstein argue happens to society as the world developments?
a shift towards a socialist society or transition to a more unequal, feudalist society
3 crits of Rostow’s development model
- too simplistic, looked at individual countries not on a wide scale
- assumes all countries are politically and economically free
- ethnocentric- focuses on western culture and assumes this is universal
3 criticisms of Wallerstein’s world systems theory
- neglect of culture- too focused on economic processes, underplays cultural aspects of social systems
- pessimistic- periphery can develop despite dependence, countries once underdeveloped are now highly developed/urbanised e.g. Singapore
- downplays local interactions- only looks at wider scale, ignores small scale processes
