Define globalisation
Globalisation is the growing interdependence of countries worldwide due to increasing volume and variety of cross- border transactions in goods and services and of international capital flows as a result of rapid and widespread diffusion of technology.
Define global systems
any organisation groupings or activities that link different parts of the world e.g. TNCs
Define global governance
attempts to regulate global systems and activities e.g. world banks, UN
Define McLuhan’s ‘Global village’ theory
McLuhan developed the theory of Globalisation in the 60s- ‘Global village’= the breakdown of spatial barriers across the world as countries are caught up in the same economic, social and cultural processes, these become less important as countries become more similar and interrelated
What are the three main forms of globalisation?
- Economic (caused by the growth of TNCs)
- Social (spread of western culture)
- Political (spread of western democracies, declining communist communities)

What is the KOF index of globalisation?
The KOF index covers dimensions of globalisation (Economic, social, political), ranking countries from most to least globalised
What is KOF’s definition of globalisation?
Globalisation is the process of creating networks and connections among actors at multi-continental distances through flows such as people, info, ideas and capital
How are dimensions of the KOF index measures?
- Economic globalisation= 36% of index
- Social globalisation= 38% of index
- Political globalisation= 26% of index
How do KOF measure economic globalisation?
Overall they measure flows of goods and stock markets (e.g. FTSE in London)
2 dimensions- actual economic flows and restrictions to trade (tariffs)
Top countries for economic globalisation= Singapore BUT since financial crash of 2008, economic globalisation has made little progress
How do KOF measure social globalisation?
Overall- spread of ideas, info images etc
3 categories:
- personal contacts= international telecom traffic, remittance payments, tourism
- information flows= number of internet users, cable tv subscribers etc
- cultural proximity- Saich’s ‘cultural globalisation’- domination of US products across the world

How do KOF measure political globalisation?
Overall- governments, their affects and ideas
KOF uses number of embassies and high commissions in a country, number of international organisations which the country is a member of e.g. Nato, number of UN peacekeeping missions they have taken part in etc
