A side effect
is an effect from a medication other than it’s intended response. For example, pain medication (analgesic) may cause dizziness and constipation; Side effects are typically predictable and easily managed, and in some cases a medication may actually be administered specifically for it’s side effect
Anadverse reaction
is a dangerous and unwanted side effect. For example, a full body rash from an antibiotic.
