Lesson 4 Flashcards
What is a biome?
It’s a regional ecosystem characterized by certain types of organisms that have developed under specific soil and climatic conditions.
What is climate.
The average annual temperature and amount of precipitation.
What is a desert?
A biome that has less then 25 cm of precipitation annually.
What is a rain forest?
They are forests in which large amounts of rain fall per year.
What is the emergent layer?
It’s the tallest layer of the rain forest which receives the most sunlight and can reach up to 70 meters.
What is the canopy?
Underneath the emergent layer, it has trees up to 50 meters tall and form a leafy roof.
What is the understory?
Below the canopy, a layer of shorter trees and vines, around 15 meters high.
Rain forest probably contain more species of plants and animals than all of the other biomes combined.
Rain forests probably contain more species of plants and animals than all of the other biomes combined.
What are grasslands?
It’s an area that is populated mostly by grasses and other nonwoody plants.
What is a savanna?
It receives as much as 120 centimeters of rain each year. Scattered shrubs and small trees grow on savannas, along with grass.
What is a deciduous tree?
They are trees that shed their leaves and grow new ones each year.
What is a boreal forest?
They are dense forests found in the upper regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
What are coniferous trees?
It’s a tree that produces seeds in cones and have waxy leaves shaped like needles.
What is a tundra?
It’s extremally cold and dry, and receives the same amount of precip as a desert.
What is permafrost?
Frozen soil (specifically in tundra)
