Lesson 3 Flashcards
=[What processes make up the water cycle?
Evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
What is evaporation?
It’s the process by which molecules of liquid water absorb energy and change to a gas.
What is condensation?
It’s the process by which a gas changes to a liquid.
What is precipitation?
As water vapor condenses, the drops of water in the clouds grow larger. Eventually the heavy drops fall to Earth as precipitation. (Really anything that falls like rain, snow, etc.)
How does nitrogen cycle through ecosystems?
In the nitrogen cycle, nitrogen moves from the air into the soil, into living things, and back into air or soil.
What is free and fixed nitrogen?
Free nitrogen is nitrogen that is unusable for most organisms, fixed nitrogen is nitrogen that has been “fixed” by bacteria in the soil and now other organisms can use it.
What is nitrogen fixation?
It’s the process of changing free nitrogen into a usable form of nitrogen.
Can producers used fixed nitrogen to build proteins and other complex compounds?
yes.
