What is a summary?
A summary is a direct point narrative or re-telling of a much longer material, either a story, an essay or any body of knowledge.
What are the tips on how to write a good summary based on the acronym “SUMMAY”
S - Summarizing is stating the main idea.
U - Utilized by students not just for studying
M - Must include only important details
M - Minimizing number of words from original material
A - Arranged logically to retain original point
Y - Yielding an understandable, shorter piece
What are the guidelines in Summarizing?
- Clarify the reasons for summarizing before reading.
- Read the material first while noting important details
- If you can on the material, encircle the key ideas.
- Or if not you can used bulleted form in a notebook.
- Without consulting the original text, connect the bulleted information you wrote down
- Re-write this bulleted form in your own words.
- Write the sentences in paragraph form.
- Compare your summary to the original text to check the accuracy.
- Create citations and references.
- You may create your own title or copy the original one.
