Lesson 3: Statistical infrequency Flashcards
Define statistical infrequency as a definition of abnormality (AO1)
A definition of abnormality that suggests that a behaviour is seen as ABNORMAL if it’s STATISTICALLY UNCOMMON in society
What do psychologists do to classify behaviour as INFREQUENT/RARE
Analyse general statistical patterns within a POPULATION to identify rare/infrequent behaviour
Give an example where psychologists may look at STATISTICALLY INFREQUENT behaviour
When analysing IQ scores
-Average IQ=100
-Anything significantly LOWER or HIGHER are statistically rare/infrequent
How can data from IQ scores be DISPLAYED?
(AO1)
using a NORMAL DISTRIBUTION CURVE
What does a LEFT skewed normal distribution curve tell us?
tells us MAJORITY of the population have HIGH scores
-tails sits to the left
1) mode
2)median
3) mean
What does a RIGHT SKEWED distribution curve tell us?
most of the population have LOW scores
tail sits to the right
1)mean
2)median
3)mode
