Lesson 2- Failure to function adequately Flashcards
Define failure to function adequately (AO1)
model of abnormality based on the fact that an individual is UNABLE TO COPE with day-to-day life as they are experiencing psychological DISTRESS or DISCOMFORT
What two psychologists came up with FAILURE TO FUNCTION adequately
Rosenhan and Seligman
What do psychologists use to assess rates of SOCIAL, OCCUPATIONAL and PSYCHOLOGICAL functioning
Global Assessment of Functioning scale (GAF)
How many points did ROSENHAN + SELIGMAN use to identify abnormality
7
mnemonic for failure to function criteria?
S.U.M.O.V.I.V
What does SUMOVIV stand for
Suffering
Unpredictability
Maladaptive
Observer discomfort
Vividness and unconventionality
Irrationality
Violation of moral standards
State a DISADVANTAGE of failure to function adequately (AO3)
(hint: Harold shipman)
Abnormality is not always accompanied by DYSFUNCTION
-some individuals may have a PSYCHOLOGICAL abnormality, but still lead a normal life + DO NOT possess 7 criteria e.g Harold shipman
-HOWEVER, an individual may appear to function inadequately but could just be having a BAD DAY
State a DISADVANTAGE of failure to function adequately
(hint: subjective)
-7 criteria can be PROBLEMATIC as they are difficult to measure+ analyse
-high levels of subjectivity + low levels of objectivity
ADDITIONALLY, there may be occasions where it is normal to experience more than ONE criteria
State an ADVANTAGE of failure to function adequately
(hint: GAF)
using G.A.F psychologists can ACCURATELY ASSESS the degree of abnormality
-if the patient appears not be COPING well in their SOCIAL/OCCUPATIONAL life then it could be concluded->failing to function adequately-> abnormal
