Lesson 3 Q2 Flashcards
What is Irony?
Irony is a literary device where the outcome is in contrast to what was expected. It can occur in plot development or character interactions, such as dialogue. Identifying irony helps the reader understand the layers of meaning in a story.
What is Dramatic Irony?
Dramatic irony occurs when the reader knows more information than the characters in the story.
Example: In Romeo and Juliet, the audience knows Juliet is not dead yet, but Romeo does not.
What is Situational Irony?
Situational irony occurs when there is a contrast between what the reader anticipates and what actually happens.
Example: Watching a news story about a fire station burning down.
What is Verbal Irony?
Verbal irony occurs when a character says something but actually means the opposite.
Example: You come home after a tiring day at school and tell your parents that your day was “very, very, relaxing!”
