Lesson 3: Practice Occupational Health & Safety Flashcards
This is an essential area of focus in any work environment, ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of employees.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
A potential to cause harm/danger or adverse effects to individuals, organizations property or equipment.
Hazard
These hazards involve inadequate and insufficient machine guards, unsafe workplace conditions, and unsafe work practices.
Safety Hazards
This type of hazard includes not being aware that there are conditions that can harm you.
Safety Hazards
These hazards are caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, and improper storage, and are not seen with the naked eye.
Biological Hazards
These hazards include solid, liquid, and vapor substances, dust or fumes, exposure to harmful substances, and can lead to health issues.
Chemical Hazards
These hazards are caused by improperly designed tools and awkward postures arising from improper works.
Ergonomic Hazards
These hazards include noise, vibration, energy (fire), weather, electricity, pressure, and elements in the surface.
Physical Hazards
The chance or probability that a person will be harmed or experience an adverse health effect caused by a hazard.
Risk
A hazard is something that has the potential to cause harm (Example; A shark in the ocean is a hazard).
Hazard
Risk is the probability that a hazard will cause harm (Example; Swimming with a shark is a risk).
Risk
This formula shows how exposure to a hazard results in risk.
HAZARD + EXPOSURE = RISK
When hazards are not controlled or mitigated, they can lead to significant adverse effects on health.
Adverse Effects on Health
These are health issues caused by inhaled chemical substances.
Respiratory Issues
These are examples of physical adverse effects on health.
Burns and Scalds
These are examples of foodborne illnesses caused by biological hazards such as bacteria.
