Lesson 3: Population And Sample Flashcards
refers to the big group of collection of all traits under study or under consideration.
In addition, can be finite or infinite.
Population
refers to a small part taken from the big group.
Sample
should be representative of a population so that sample data can be used to draw conclusions about that population.
Sample
must be collected using an appropriate method, such as random sampling. When sample data are collected using an inappropriate method, the data cannot be used
to draw conclusions about the population.
Sample data
Is a numerical description of a population characteristics.
Parameter
Is a numerical description of a sample characteristics.
Statistic
Consists of information coming from observations, counts, measurements, or responses.
Data
All data collected in a particular study are referred to as the
Data Set
What are the 2 Main Sources of Data?
- Primary Data
- Secondary Data
Are data that come from an original source, and are intended to answer specific research questions, can be taken by interview, mail-in questionnaire, survey, or experimentation.
Primary Data
Are data that are taken from previously recorded data such as information in research conducted, industry financial statements, business periodicals, and government reports. It can also be taken electronically e.g. via internet websites and compact disc.
Secondary Data
Is constant for a population.
Will not change from sample to sample
Population Parameter
Can change from sample to sample
