Lesson 3 - Globalisation of Places Flashcards
Why do some people argue globalisation has made place less important?
Global capitalism has eroded local cultures + produced identical places (placelessness)
What is the evidence to support that globalisation causes placelessness?
Global chains e.g. Starbucks are in high streets all over the world.
US write James Kunstler talks about the spread of cities with no sense of community, identical shopping malls, car parks and roads.
How did Totnes in Devon resist globalisation
75% of the local population signed a petition against a new costs outlet, displaying itself as a community that’s proud of its independence
How are multinational corporations (MNC’s) adapting to the local markets?
Through globalisation i.e. 36,000 restaurants in 100 countries, but McDonald’s has adapted by selling no pork in Muslim countries or McCafes in coffee cultures for example
What affects the identity of people in a place?
Give an example
A change in the nature of the place or social, economic and environmental issues.
E.g. Brazilian football fans had part of their national identity disturbed when they lost 7-1 to Germany
How does the collapse of an industry affect people?
The people made redundant will cease to have the usual social interactions associated with the locale of the factory and must re-evaluate their role in society + have to change their identity as a result of the place changing.
