Lesson 3 - Creation Week, Roles of Adam, and Fall of Adam & Eve Flashcards
Why is work not a punishment? (Be able to back it up with temple diagram and scripture).
Work is NOT a punishment because as God worked to create the Earth and the Heavens, he did not do so as a punishment but instead in love for us
→ As we work just as God worked, we are similar to the image and likeness of God
→ Any little thing we do can be offered to God, like working, studying, chores, etc. (noble work)
→ Do work in love and offer it to God
→ Genesis 2:15: “to till [the ground] and keep it.” Adam and Eve were working before they were punished for sinning
What are the Roles of Adam, back them up from Scripture.
The following are Adam’s roles: Adam’s purpose in life (why God created him), which is also our purpose in life.
“…dominion…” - Genesis 1:26, 28
→ When dominion is stated in these verses, they refer to Adam’s ownership over the animals that God created on Earth. (Kingship)
“…to till it and keep it” - Genesis 2:15
→ In this verse, god is stating another of Adam’s roles to him, the priestly role, because as God tells Adam to work, you can offer/sacrifice your work to God just as priests in the past made sacrifices. (Priestly Role)
“[naming the animals]” - Genesis 2:18-20
→ In these verses, God asks Adam to name the animals, which means Adam is working on behalf of the lord just as prophets work/speak on behalf of God. (Prophet)
“…bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh…” - Genesis 2:23
→ In this verse, Adam confesses to Eve and asks her to join his family just as God asks us to join His family; this verse is often spoken at wedding ceremonies. (Bridegroom)
How do the Roles of Adam relate to us today?
So, Adam’s five roles (being holy) are Our Calling (which God calls us to follow) because the purpose/meaning of Adam’s life remains the purpose of each of our lives.
How it relates to us today:
→ Child of God
When you are called a child of God, people are referring to being made in the image and likeness of God. Another term for this is “Divine Filiation.” Essentially, as Catholics/Christians, our role is to preach the Word of God to others
→ King
Kingship of ourselves, over sin, over Satan
→ Priest
The sacrifice of offering our own lives (Romans 12:11)
→ Prophet
God calls us (through baptism) to speak God’s word to the world
→ Bridegroom
We are intended for a relationship (communion) with another Person (God)
What is the purpose of our lives concerning the roles of Adam (being holy)?
The purpose/meaning of Adam’s life remains the purpose of each of our lives.
Essentially, Adam’s roles: Adam’s purpose in life (why God created him), which is also our purpose in life.
What is Original Sin?
Original Sin
→ It refers to the fallen state inherited from Adam and Eve (the sin of Adam & Eve eating an apple from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil)
How is Original Sin different from Personal Sin?
Original Sin is inherited unconsciously at birth. It is not a personal sin, which is a sin that individuals commit intentionally/consciously
Why do we suffer the consequences of Adam and Eve?
We suffer the consequences of Adam and Ever because we inherited them. For example, if you had rich parent that suddenly lost their money, you would go from being a rich child to a poor child. This wasn’t committed by you, it was inherited.
How do we cleanse ourselves from Original Sin?
Original Sin is cleansed away with baptism.
