Lesson 1 - What is the Bible? Flashcards
What is the bible?
The Bible is the inspired (breathed in) and inerrant word of God.
What does it mean when we say the Bible is inspired?
When we say the Bible is inspired we mean God is the ultimate author, but the Holy Spirit guided the intellects of the authors of The Bible.
What does the Bible being inerrant mean?
The Bible has no errors; it always teaches the truth.
What are the sources of revelation?
The Word of God (also known as the revelation of God/sources of revelation) can be found in two areas: Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.
What is the difference between Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition?
Sacred Scripture (the inspired word of God, meaning the Bible) and Sacred Tradition (the living word of God, meaning what we do physically, such as mass).
What is the difference between Good and Bad traditions, cite scripture backing up each meaning and explain what happened in the cited scripture.
An example of a BAD tradition (lowercase t) is Matthew 15:6, “traditions of man.” The money the Pharisees had was meant to support their parents but they used it for the temple, going against the commandment to honour thy father and thy mother.
An example of a GOOD Tradition (uppercase T) is 2 Thessalonians 2:15
Paul is telling the people to hold fast to the traditions that were passed down to you where by mouth or by letter. Essentially he is saying to stick to your current traditions and not change them in the name of ‘modernizing’ them.
